Bakkie apartment building Hoogezand
Since the independence of Suriname (in 1975), about 100,000 Surinamese have left their country. Most of them have settled in the Netherlands. A large group of these Surinamese are originally of Javanese descent. In the documentary "Still on the way between Bakkie and Hoogezand' filmmaker Fons Grasveld tells the story of Mr and Mrs Nawidjaja. Mr and Mrs Nawidjaja lived in Bakkie, and later settled in the Bakkie apartment building in Hoogezand.
The documentary from 1986 shows what had changed in their lives at the time and what the Javanese-Surinamese village of Bakkie still means to them.
