History plantation Reynsdorp
Reynsdorp (or Bakkie), is a former coffee plantation which was founded by Nicolaas Reynsdorp in 1744. In 1830 Reynsdorp was a medium-sized plantation with 112 slaves. When slavery was abolished, the plantation was no longer in production. Five slaves were freed after the abolition. These slaves received the family names Delaan, Direcks, Latour, Meerwijk and Reynsdorp.
Plantation Foundation (1744)
The history of the plantation is related to the history of the Reynsdorp family in Suriname. The brothers (or cousins) Nicolaas and Hermannus Laurens must have arrived in Suriname around 1730. They married the Craffort sisters. The brothers belonged to the Lutheran congregation, and their fortunes can be traced somewhat through the registers of this congregation.
